1. How these fires were helpful in regards to
changing life safety codes in current buildings?
Investigation in to the both events showed inadequate fire protection and safety systems within
the school which was main reason behind deaths. Since after the event of
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire occurred NFPA an organization that looked into the
matter of proper safety of life looked in to the matter and revised their
standards and code for safety of life and placed life safety a head of property
protection. In 1916, the committee’s work was published in a pamphlet, “Outside
Stairs for Fire Exits.” In 1918, another committee report was published in a
pamphlet titled “Safeguarding Factory Workers from Fire.” The pamphlets were
widely circulated, put into general use, and, with other documents, form the
basis of the present Life Safety Code. According to NFPA investigation report
on the matter of Our Lady of Angles displayed the main reason for loss of life
was the inadequate exits points. In 1960 it was proposed that schools should be
made according to following safety standard groups. One story building with
exterior or interior access, or multi story buildings with access only by
exterior balconies and outside stairs, Existing buildings, Sprinklered
buildings, Buildings of two stories or more with egress through corridors and
interior stairways, Open-plan schools. In 1960 building code was reformed that
all parts of buildings are to be sprinklered, also the aloowable travel
distance to exits were increased from 100ft to 150 ft.
2. What did we learn about combustion as a
result of these tragic fires?
Combustion in these residence mainly occurred
due to low level security and use of old standards for life safety. Exit points
were not placed accordingly and also building designs. One of the main reason
is also not using sprinklered’s. The safety design for both buildings were
outdated and needed a lot of improvements after a long discussions NPFA
reformed all their outdated safety standards into new one.
3. What changes came from these particular
finish was considered as one of the main cause that led to fire spread in Our
Lady of Angles School. 92 students and 3 nuns died as a result of the fire, a
lot of others were injured and burned severely. This life taking event caused
by fire took international attention and encouraged a lot of changes and
advancements in the system of fire safety codes and regulations governing U.S.
schools and other public buildings. Same goes with the Triangle Shirtwaist
Fire after the event at 1915 Annual meeting, NFPA make a lot of changes and
revised specifications for fire escapes, it broadens its focus to life safety. In
1916, the committee’s work was published in a pamphlet, “Outside Stairs for
Fire Exits.” In 1918, another committee report was published in a pamphlet
titled “Safeguarding Factory Workers from Fire.” The pamphlets were widely
circulated, put into general use, and, with other documents, form the basis of
the present Life Safety Code.
there potential for tragic fires today and why?
Today we talk of the ‘common denominator’ of
tragic fire incidents as a short list of fuels, weather and topographic characteristics
shared by fires that blew up and killed fire fighters. Difference in human
behaviours and situational creativities are the reason for tragedies and
greatest successes. The behaviour failure during the time of emergency is a
great cause towards catastrophic event that leads to life loss. The potential
for loss of life in forest fires, due to burns or other fire-induced causes, is
higher now than ever before. Many people live in or play in the wildlands. Different
departments are in work to minimize the loss or to stop it completely but
unfortunately many life loss events occurs in today’s world after a the
precautions and security parameters applied.
